Ogre Kingdoms
Ogre Camps The true power of ogre factions is centered in their nomadic raiding camps. Only in such camps can ogre leaders hold a proper feast and attract the strongest warriors. Meat An ogre tyrant is only as great as his meat larder. By maintaining a steady harvest of meat, ogre factions can prevent their armies from descending into cannibalism and sacrifice great offerings to the Maw for its powerful blessings. Big Names Ogres respect a reputation for adventure and impressive feats and truly great figures in ogre society will be honored with great names known to all. |
Prologue: The Disciples of the maw
As a captive, I was hauled back across the bleak wastes sooner than I had planned and without the prize I had been promised. To save myself from the Slaughterer’s cauldron, I shared my portents of the rise of the Ruinous Powers with him and, to my surprise, the ogre-prophet did not question them, but told me these were only a handful among many prophecies. He explained that the Maw fed him visions that were leading his Disciples to a new land of plenty and that I was fated to help him. From his description of this land, I recognized that he sought the Border Princes. His Disciples consisted of many bulls from the remnants of clans that were decimated by the wars of Goldtooth’s rise to power and subsequent conflict with the Iron Dragon, but he was also followed closely by bands of gaunt feral ogres that seemed closer to beasts, as I never saw them speak or do much other than fight or eat. The other ogers shunned these creatures, but the Slaughterer seemed to place great importance in providing them with meat and referred to them as 'those closest to the Maw'. Terrified of their ravenous stares and grotesque claws, I took great care to avoid them.
After Skrag’s horde finally crossed the World’s Teeth Mountains, I guided them far away from the largest cities, such as Akendorf, that might send out an army to stop us, but Skrag would not reveal where he wished the journey to end until we stopped at the foot of the Black Mountains and his scouts returned with word of a vast network of uninhabited dwarf ruins. With a great ceremony consisting of the ritual butchery of countless creatures and captives, Skrag sanctified the caverns as the new home of his Disciples. Within a few weeks, however, Skrag recieved word that an army of men approached his refuge, and Skrag marched out to meet them, followed by his bulls with clubs in hand. The general of the human army announced that he was from the city of Matorca and acted in the name of the alliance of Myrmidens. He declared that the ogres must agree to enlist in the service of Myrmidens or would be forced to leave the region. Skrag informed him that he was here at the Maw’s command and that to stand against the Maw was to be consumed. While the humans greatly outnumbered Skrags ogres and gnoblars, Skrag did not arrogantly throw his warriors onto the sharp spears of the enemy, sending gnoblars to attack them instead, and wisely sent warriors with huge iron guards raised upon their arms to lead the charge around their flanks, blocking most of the incoming cloud of crossbow bolts before the ogres slashed through their ranks. The army of Matorca was ripped apart, while only a few ogres and some handful of gnoblars were left fallen on the field to be collected later and added to the Disciples’ meat larder. Not content, Skrag led his warriors on to Matorca itself and captured the now undefended port town, but there was no great pillaging or massacre there. The small city surrendered to the Slaughterer and bowed to his rule, and those who had not fled into the wilds submitted to providing for the Disciples and paying Skrag a vast tribute.
At his demand, I advised Skrag on the trade that passes through the Border Princes’ region and how it might be harnessed through Matorca and her rivals, and realized Skrag's designs reached farther than I had imagined, as he intended to carve out a great realm for the Disciples of the Maw. While the populace may have hoped to be quickly freed from Skrag’s yoke, a larger army sent from Akendorf to liberate the city was quickly crushed as well and Matorca began to realize they were but the first stone in the foundation of a new Ogre Kingdom.

Epilogue: Trecherous WAters
My time with the Disciples of the Maw began as a prisoner but as I came to see that I had underestimated the world-shaping potential of the Ogre Kingdoms, I began to serve the Slaughterer of my own will. Though I saw the Disciples of the Maw wreak great destruction in the Border Princes and among the Dwarf's mountain holdings, I found that I could not judge their open bloodthirst to be a greater evil than the cunning and greed of those they consumed. With my help he located the lost Cauldron of the Great Maw and I followed him once again into the Dark Lands to obtain the powerful artifact, and I was vindicated when I saw the Slaughterer unleash his power on the unholy Counts of Sylvania and their Orc allies. But I also knew the power of the Disciples would never be enough to stop the coming horrors foretold by my true master, the cursed grimoire, and so when I saw a trade ship leaving for Estalia, I took the opportunity to seek further help while the Ogres fought to claim the riches of the halfling lands. However, I was not successful in leaving the war behind, as a displaced scion of Sylvania has also booked passage unbeknownst to me. Ten days and one mutiny later, the ship was headed into unknown waters, with me confined to the hold with the other prisoners that had not yet been tossed overboard.
