A New Order - Starting Conditions
This campaign will focus on prospering in the shadows of Europe's great powers. The list of available nations features those that were significant political entities at one point but, by the end of the game's time frame, had diminished to minor footnotes on the pages of history. Initially, these nations will be constantly under threat from the continent's larger kingdoms and will likely be forced to work together to ensure their continued independence. Survival will require well orchestrated alliances and the deft manipulation of conflict between the great powers. Those that successfully remove their immediate threats may then have the luxury of readjusting their diplomacy and those that find the greatest prosperity may find the world slowly turning against them.
The nations below are available in this scenario and listed in order of their starting desirability. Players choose nations in order of their final position in the last campaign, except for the winner who must choose last. New players may choose before all others.

Kingdom of Portugal - King Afonso V de Avis - On the edge of Europe and the known world, the Portuguese people can feel safe as long as relations with the much larger kingdom of Castile remain good. Unable to challenge their larger neighbor, the Portuguese can focus on expanding their holdings in North Africa or funding the exploration of the Atlantic. Poised to discover and colonize new lands faster than any other Europeans, Portugal can easily become the leading colonial power in the world and funnel trade goods from around the world back to Lisbon. Alternatively, alliances with Castile's rivals could open up the conquest of Iberia and complete control of trade in Sevilla.
Kingdom of Hungary - Interregnum - Bloodied and leaderless after the Battle of Varna and the last crusade against the Ottoman invaders, the Hungarian nobles have accepted the ascendance of an Austrian Habsburg child to the throne. Hungary is a large kingdom with no immediate threats and is in a good position to dominate eastern Europe if it can diplomatically outmaneuver the growing powers of the Ottoman Empire and the Polish-Lithuanian alliance. For the Hungarians, their traditional alliance with the Holy Roman Emperor can ensure their survival, but the only way to stymie its rivals is to ally or annex the smaller nations that they hope to conquer.
Kingdom of Denmark - King Christopher III von Wittelsbach - Denmark is currently leading the Kalmar Union of Norway and Sweden and wields immense power in northern Europe. However, using this advantage to extend Denmark's reach will not be simple. The formidable Kingdom of England and the growing Polish-Lithuanian alliance will likely place Scandinavian control of the Baltic in an inescapable vice. The German trade cities under the protection of the Holy Roman Empire wait for any moment of Danish weakness in which they can forcibly take the access routes to the Baltic Sea. With many envious enemies, the Swedes or Norwegians will likely find many supporters if they should ever desire to regain their independence.
Mamluk Sultanate - Sultan Jaqmaq Burji- The Sultanate of Cairo has been controlled by the Mamluk warrior-slave families for almost 200 years, and it is they who drove out the last Crusaders from the Holy Land and they who defeated the Mongol hordes. A new Mongol threat has been growing in the East, however, and the Ottoman Empire's desire for conquest threatens the Mamluk sphere of influence. Already rivaling Mamluk power, the Ottoman Sultan will quickly become a dangerous threat if allowed to expand, and the Timurid hordes constantly threaten to engulf the region in war. Furthermore, their distance from the new ideas of the Italian Renaissance will be a major obstacle in keeping the Egyptian nation competitive with their rivals. Situated atop the valuable trade routes that connect Asia to the Mediterranean, the Mamluk Sultans can be assured of vast wealth if they focus on controlling these resources, and leveraging such opportunities will be vital to the success of the inevitable wars ahead for the famed defenders of Islam.
Kingdom of Bohemia - Interregnum - The Bohemian nobility has not accepted the Habsburg heir to their throne, and will most likely elect one of their own to succeed the late King Albert. Bohemia enjoys the security of the Holy Roman Empire and has the prestigious position of elector. With significant diplomatic effort, the kings of Bohemia can fight for the Imperial title, or take the opportunity to expand their power within its borders at the other members' expense. On the other hand, the Bohemians can also reach outside the empire and work with the rivals of Poland to claim Polish lands for themselves.
Kingdom of Aragon - King Alfons V de Trastamara - With intimidating neighbors such as France and Castile, the Aragonese will need to carefully choose allies that can be helpful in shifting the balance of power in their favor. Aragon controls most of the western Mediterranean and has recently gained the crown of Naples, but none of this will secure their independence if they find themselves fighting both great powers with no powerful allies of their own. Aragon's prosperity will likely depend on the decline of Castile and France, and monopolization of the trade in Genoa.
Duchy of Burgundy - Duke Philippe III de Bourgogne - The Duke of Burgundy has amassed a large number of titles and holds unions with Brabant, Flanders, and Holland. Taken together, his realms have begun to rival the French king's and Philippe dreams of forming a new Kingdom of Burgundy. However, this does not pass the French king's notice and he has become intent on breaking Burgundy's power and formally annexing its domains. An alliance with the Holy Roman Emperor in Austria could provide significant leverage against France, but the Empire could just as easily turn on the duchy itself. As Burgundy works on integrating its many realms, it should watch carefully to see which of France's rivals can help ensure their independence.
Serene Republic of Venice - Serene Doge Francesco Foscarini - As a merchant republic, Venice is a major sea power in the Mediterranean and can claim vast incomes from using its trade centers to guide trade from Egypt and Constantinople back to the Venetian isles. Its many powerful neighbors will likely desire to control this trade themselves and Venice will need to find common cause with the enemies of the Ottomans and Austrians. Smart alliances with Europe's powerful inland nations will greatly assist continued Venetian dominance of the Mediterranean, and the Venetian Doge can also take advantage of special trade league alliances with the numerous smaller nations of Italy and Greece.
Teutonic Order - Hochmeister Ludwig von Erlichschausen - Without pagan enemies to unite against, the Teutonic Order is no longer a welcome neighbor of the Poles and has never been friends with the Lithuanians. To keep control of the territory the Order has conquered, the Teutons will need to find support from Poland's rivals. If the order can secure its boundaries and survive, it can control lucrative Baltic trade routes and possibly involve itself in imperial politics, but as a Monastic Order it will face important decisions during the Reformation. The stability of Catholicism can greatly ease the governance of foreign peoples, but secularizing the Teutonic government and following the new heresies promises a bold new Prussian kingdom.
Republic of Switzerland - Die Tagsatzung - A collection of mountain towns that came together for mutual defense and prosperity, Switzerland is ruled by a council of elected leaders. While under no immediate threat and under the protection of the Holy Roman Emperor, Switzerland will have a difficult time becoming anymore influential than it already is. As a republic, Switzerland holds little political clout within the Empire, and is bounded by the strong duchies of Austria, Savoy, and Milan. The independence of the Free Cities to the north is protected by the Emperor, but there are also a few smaller duchies that might be vulnerable to the. Alternatively, northern Italy is sure to become chaotic as it distances itself from the Empire, and the armies of the mountain towns might find the opportunity to descend on the rich lowlands near the Mediterranean coast. If Switzerland wants to remain around long enough to take advantage of such a situation, however, it will surely need many strong alliances to deter the advances of its stronger neighbors.
Kingdom of Scotland - King James II Stuart - The Scottish have been at odds with the English for centuries, but the English have become far too powerful to face directly on the battlefield. Alone on the Isles with their enemy, its seems unlikely that the Scots will be able to maintain their independence, but if fortunes turn against their aggressors, one well organized war could readdress the balance of power and ensure the Scots' prosperity. Scotland will most definitely need skilled leadership and strong allies in order to escape their initial disadvantages, and a secure place on the British Isles would be only the first step of their intimidating struggle
Duchy of Brittany - Duke François de Dreux - The Bretons have maintained an amiable relationship with, as well as a significant degree of independence from, the French kingdom, but have constantly been under threat of annexation. Their recent alliance with the powerful duke of Burgundy threatens to destabilize this status quo but the Breton nobility finally sense an opportunity to expand their influence and entrench their sovereignty. With good fortune in war, Brittany can lay claim to much of the surrounding French and English land, but the Bretons will be forced to rely on strong alliances and brutal opportunism to defeat its much stronger neighbors. Safer ambitions, however, lie with the Breton explorers in Nantes who eagerly await official support for exploration across the Atlantic Ocean.
