Campaign Sessions - Sun 7-10pm EST, starting Sep 16
Nation Selection - Sat 8pm EST, Sep 8 Discord: https://discordapp.com/invite/mvD8vAR Twitch: https://www.twitch.tv/officialmrscruff/ |
This campaign focuses on the three sites that independently developed civilizations based on systems of agriculture, writing, and societal specialization. These locations held advantages in fertility, climate, and mobility that have maintained their importance throughout the millennia and they have reliably been held as the heartlands of subsequent empires and bitterly contested during times of civil strife.
With the arrival of the European Imperialists, the goods of these regions would be extracted away from local populations, and diverted over the oceans on European ships from conquered ports all along the Asian coasts. Even without controlling the regional heartlands, Imperialist were able to use local political divisions to gain control of local markets, and were more threatened by their European competitors than by even the strongest regional powers.
In this campaign, players will find themselves facing the same choices as the past rulers of these nation, and will have to determine for themselves if banding with their local rivals or allying with distant powers will better ensure their nation's prosperity.

Rule 7: www.twitch.tv/videos/307552708
1. Points - Victory Cards, Origin Sites, and Trade Sites (Campaign Specific)
In-game points will be ignored for this campaign. Instead, players may accumulate points as described below.
Victory Cards - The arbitrary demands of your people. Victory cards will only be scored at the end of each age. At the end of each age, players will gain an amount of points equal to the in-game value of each victory card owned (1000, 2000, 3000, or 4000) and half this value will be subtracted from any other players that once held the province (this will be determined by the in-game related malus). Occupation will be ignored for this determination.
Origin Sites - The cradles of civilization. Non-Imperialist tiers (tiers 1, 3, and 4) will each have two target origin sites available to their tier. At the end of each age, each player will gain 1000 points for each origin site owned (ownership ignores occupation throughout these rules) and a player that owns both of his tier's origin sites will gain an additional 1000 points. Imperialist (tier 2) players can take the origin sites of any other tier, gaining 1000 points for each origin site owned and an additional 1000 points for owning both sites of any tier. These point values will all be multiplied by 2 at the end of the 2nd age, 3 at the end of the 3rd age, and 4 at the end of the final age. Origin Sites owned by non-tributary subjects can be claimed and scored by their overlords instead of by the owner at the discretion of the overlord.
Trade Sites - The access points to world trade. Non-Imperialist tiers will each have 4 target trade sites available to their tier. At the end of each age, each player will gain 500 points for each trade site owned. Imperialist players can take the trade sites of any other tier and will gain also gain 500 points for each one owned. The value of any trade site can be upgraded to 1000 points if its Center of Trade has been upgraded to level 3. These point values will all be multiplied by 2 at the end of the 2nd age, 3 at the end of the 3rd age, and 4 at the end of the final age. Trade Sites owned by non-tributary subjects can be claimed and scored by their overlords instead of by the owner at the discretion of the overlord.
2. Imperialist Manipulation (Campaign Specific)
At the end of each age, after scores have been totaled, the highest scoring player from each Non-Imperialist tier must Transfer Trade at 30% to the Imperialist who gained the most points from origin or trade sites belonging to his tier if any Imperialist player gained any points from sites belonging to his tier. If multiple Imperialist players are tied in points from his tier, the transferring player may choose which Imperialist nation he wants to transfer to. This player must maintain this transfer throughout the entirety of the next age, except for when at war with this player. If the Imperialist player has a level 3 Center of Trade in at least two of his origin or trade cites belonging to that tier, the highest scoring player must Steer Trade to the Imperialist player instead of Transfer Trade. A player may pause the game at any time to ensure this rule is enforced.
3. Starting Area Protection
Players may not annex, or directly cause the annexation of, any of the provinces owned by another player in the area of that player's starting capital, in any treaty they control, nor can they return a province or cause the release of a nation that would return a province from a player's capital area in any treaty they control. Players may vassalize or otherwise subjugate a player, but may not diplomatically annex a player. A player's protected area will never change and does not move if a player moves his capital by choice, national decision, or switching to a subject nation. Should a player change nations or fail to return to the game, the starting area of the player's abandoned nation will remain protected in this way and will never be available for annexation.
4. Endless Player Resurrection
If a player is eliminated by the AI, his starting capital, and all provinces in his capital's area that still have cores of his nation, will be released at the start of the next session as a vassal of the nation that now owns his starting capital province.
5. First Absence Protection
During a missed session, a player may invoke protection for their nation one time. Other players may not attack a protected nation, and may not demand any peace terms from their nation if they find themselves at war by other means. Otherwise absent players' nations are not protected in missed sessions and players cannot take advantage of protection after the year 1750 regardless. If a war continues into a player's protected session, his enemies may not demand the ceding/release of land they did not occupy at the start of the protected session, or release nations that do not entirely exist within land they occupied at the start of the protected session, but other treaty terms that have no direct effect on province ownership are allowed in this situation. Please inform one of the game hosts anytime before the start of a session if you will be absent and would like to use your protection. Protection may be used if arriving late but not for departing early.
6. Switching to a Subject Nation
A player may use the vassal release mechanic to switch to playing a released vassal. On the other hand, if I player wishes to switch to playing as one of their colonial nations, they may select the colonial nation at the start of any session or hot-join an ongoing session and resume as the colonial nation, but may not use the colonial nation release mechanic to switch to their colonial nation. These decisions cannot be reversed. A player may not switch to other subject types such as personal unions or tributaries.
7. The 30% Rule
In order to encourage more frequent, shorter wars that do not devolve into world-spanning conflicts, we will be using the 30% Rule in this campaign. At any point in a war that the primary aggressor/defender has 30% or more war-score, they may send a peace treaty demanding a white peace or the annexation of one province that they occupy, that is owned by the primary defender/aggressor, and that they share a border with by land or sea, and this peace treaty cannot be refused. To be unrefusable, the treaty must contain no other conditions except a white peace or the annexation of the single province and the province must not be a nation's capital. The sending player may pause the game for this treaty, so that the war-score will not change and the rule can be enforced. For this rule, provinces owned or occupied by non-tributary subjects count as being owned or occupied by their overlord.
8. Nation Selection
Selection Order - Nation selection in this campaign will draw from the final rankings of the Third Rome campaign (using the previous rewards description). Excluding the winners of each tier (who will be selecting last), all players returning from the Third Rome campaign will be able to to select nations in order of their final ranking descending from top score to lowest score, followed by any new players in a randomly determined order, followed by the winners of each tier in order of final ranking. A player who has played in earlier campaigns but did not participate in Third Rome will be allowed to use the final ranking of their latest campaign to determine their selection placement, and will be placed directly behind the player of equivalent ranking from Third Rome. Any players who missed more than 50% of sessions in their last campaign will not pick according to score and will place placed at the end of the selection order in a random ranking determined by d100. A roll of 80 or higher will also place them before the 'winners' group', just to make things a bit less predictable.
Tiers - Please remember to choose a tier that reflects the challenge and intensity that you wish to experience. While you will interact and compete for the same resources with all other players, your score will only be compared to players from within your own tier. Tier 1 is rewarded with first choice from the (undisclosed) prize pool (winner only) and earliest choices in nation selection in the next campaign (according to the latest "rewards" update seen below), and is intended for players seeking difficult starts, intense diplomacy and intrigue, and experienced competition. Tier 4 is intended for players seeking more secure starts, more room to learn, more leniency for absences, and a fair amount of cooperation alongside their competition, but will have later placement for the next nation selection and its winner gets last selection from the prize pool. With four tiers, it is hoped that each player will be given some chance to customize their game experience.
Imbalance - Obviously, even within tiers, the nation choices are imbalanced in strength, making earlier selection positions very valuable for grabbing the "best" nations in any one tier. The choices available have been selected to allow each player good opportunities to use diplomacy and intrigue to compensate for any lacking in raw military or economic might. Any viewing of the previous campaign final rankings should be sufficient evidence to support the fact that starting nation strength does not predict final ranking.

Euphrates River - Tier 1
Along with the Tigris, the Euphrates River was the lifeblood of the world's earliest civilizations and was the center of the Sumerian, Babylonian, and Assyrian realms. From here came the roots of the Egyptian and Greek civilizations and the origins of all European institutions. The chaos and violent power shifts that have followed the decades after Timur's conquests have left the region disputed over by fragmenting Mongol and Turkic dynasties, overshadowed and overlooked by the growing political powers of the Nile Delta, Anatolia, and the Timurid successor states. Though the Qara Qoyunlu have defeated the Jalarids and claimed all of the riverlands as their domain, their hold is unstable and they have many enemies. Now is a time of opportunity, a time for the creation of a new kingdom, one worthy of the Cradle of Civilization.

Imperialists - Tier 2
Byzantium has fallen and Christendom has lost its traditional access routes to the valuable goods of the Far East. With the Silk Road held firmly in heathen hands, great fortune and fame is assured for any monarchs or merchants who can regain access and influence in the East. While many proclaim that Constantinople and the Holy Land must be reclaimed for the Cross, some think that ships could possibly circumvent these enemy empires entirely if only a route could be found around the vastness of Africa, or across the Atlantic. By land or by sea, when the powers of Europe find their way back to the East, will they find divided lands, weak and ripe for conquest, or united empires with technologies rivaling their own, ready to defend their cultures from Imperialist invasion?

Indus River - Tier 3
Supporting prosperous agriculture and animal domestication that led to unprecedented urban populations, the Indus River Valley was the seat of an enduring Harappan civilization, the ancient foundations of Delhi, Lahore, and Sindh. Since that time, the region has been fought over by Alexander and his successors, ruled by Emperor's Chandragupta and Ashoka, and invaded by the Umayyads, and has served as a vibrant meeting place of the Buddhist, Hindu, and Islamic religions, along with their myriad cultures. Most recently, the Indus River region has served as the center of the Tughlaq empire, but just as in Mesopotamia, the power structures of the Indus River region were forever changed by the conqueror Timur Lang, or Tamerlane, who defeated the Tughlaq dynasty, and left only weak opportunists to rule in his wake. With Delhi vulnerable to conquest and the wealth of the lower river ports divided among many squabbling rulers, now is the time for the region's latest chapter to begin.

Yellow River - TIER 4
Having already thrived on the these hospitable plains for thousands of years, the civilization of the Yellow River's plains began to exert its power throughout China as first the Xia and then the Shang dynasties, the earliest recorded monarchs of Chinese history. Now China is dominated by the Ming dynasty, who have recently toppled the Yuan dynasty and Mongol rule, and rule with great authority, but the chaos of this recent power shift and usurpation is still fresh in China's memory. As they have seen how capricious the Mandate of Heaven can be, other major clans have been emboldened to assert their own authority in defiance of Beijing's power and could seek to further undermine the Ming. Meanwhile, the neighboring Korean kingdom and the independent khans across the Great Wall consider how best to exploit any weakness in the Emperor's hold over his vast realm. While these local powers will undoubtedly find advantage in the decline of Ming rule, any loss of centralized power may also invite in the unforeseen influence of powerful foreign nations attempting to gain a foothold in this prosperous land.
