The Grand Hierophant
and the Exiled Campaign
Thousands of years ago, the Land of the Dead was full of vibrant life and the Great Mortis River, known then as the Vitae, was the heart of the prosperous kingdoms of Nehekhara. In the harsh deserts of this land, however, death was never far, stalking its victims in the forms of heat, thirst, or scorpion venom. Even then, at the heights of their power, death permeated all facets of Nehekharan culture and fascinated its scholars. The Mortuary Cult, dedicated only to the preservation of mortal remains at first, would eventually take a central role within Nehekharan religion and gain unprecedented power under the patronage of King Settra, in the later decades of his reign. Though the Cult would succeed in manipulating the energies of life in ways that could extend lifespans for the king and favored others, they were unable to grant him mastery over death itself as he desired, but the kings that followed would continue to support the Cult as they too desired that their own souls be protected and preserved in expectation of the Cult’s ultimate success. Under the leadership of Khatep, the Mortuary Cult attained its greatest achievements, and Khatep himself was the first to undergo the experiments that would break the inevitable hold of death over the soul. Only those with great magical talent could undergo this transformation, however, and those that did still suffered from senses dulling and flesh decaying over the centuries. Though their existence in the material realm was maintained, these eternal beings became known as liches as their humanity faded. Khatep and his council knew that this fate was not what their patrons desired, and so their work continued and the liche priests of the Cult protected the mortuary pyramids and their inhabitants throughout the rise and fall of the various Nehekharan kingdoms and dynasties.
When the Great Betrayer, Cursed of the Gods, wrought the fall of Nehekhara and inadvertently awoke many of the Tomb Kings, it was Grand Hierophant Khatep who chose to wake King Settra as well to bring order to Nehekhara’s new reality and purpose to its people. Aghast at the fate of his land, King Settra, exiled the Grand Hierophant for his Cult’s failure to bring about his ambitions. An outcast from the Nehekharan courts, morbid reflections of their living counterparts, the Grand Hierophant began his work anew as he wandered the deserts and journeyed into foreign lands in search of ancient knowledge and artifacts that would redeem his cult in the eyes of the Imperishable. From the shadows, Khatep defended Khemri and the Land of the Dead from those who sought to defile its tomb-cities and aided worthy kings of Nehekhara in their conflicts against the students of the Great Betrayer’s teachings. Now, a brilliant comet streaks across the sky, day and night, and its effects over the winds of magic have energized the Betrayer’s Black Pyramid, drawing the attention of Nehekhara’s priests and kings...

Prologue - The Land of Chill - Winter, Year 5007
Winter, Year 5007
Though my senses may have dulled through millennia of slumber, I feel the frigid nature of this foreign climate as an icy hand around my soul, embittering my thoughts and nurturing my doubts, though it nurtures little else. I speak of doubts, but my house’s oaths and honor bind me to the Grand Hierophant’s cause and I will not forsake the Mortuary Cult in its time of need, though he tests my conviction by taking me so far from the warm sun of my home. Khatep believes that, from this wasteland, he can bring forth a new age for Nehekhara, and I would sacrifice much to see his vision realized. Taking up the quill of a scribe, I will document our journey and the story of the Exiles of Nehek.
They first tried to wake my esteemed father, Setep the Pious, famed for uniting many of Nehekhara’s kingdoms under his rule, and forcing and end to the schisms of the priesthood. His ties to the Mortuary Cult supported the legitimacy of his claim as High King of Nehekhara, and the wise among his successors maintained the bonds between our dynasty and the servants of the gods. However, his soul proved unresponsive to temporal affairs, refusing to be drawn back into his worldly form by the Cult’s incantations. They would then turn to me, his son and heir, with more success. Once again roused to this mockery of eternal life, Khatep informed me of arrival of the Two-Headed Vulture in the sky, the state of the Black Pyramid, and his need for the resources of my house.
Coinciding with the astronomical anomaly, one of the Cult’s many priests had unearthed an obelisk created by the servants of the Great Betrayer that detailed how the workings of the Black Pyramid, and how the Codices Mortifica were needed for its function. These volumes had been smuggled far and wide by the Great Necromancer’s followers as they fled Nehekhara following his defeat, and many were likely destroyed. Assembling them all in order to open the Black Pyramid, would be a futile pursuit, but in its current state, only certain key works might be needed to provoke its desired response. Khatep would see these works recovered by the Mortuary Cult, but great force and vast resources would be needed.
Exiled from Nehekhara’s kingdoms, Khatep had risked much in awakening me, and there would be little opportunity to secure further assistance before the Grand Hierophant must depart the realm. On the western outskirts, as we neared the secret location of Khatep’s ships, Khatep spent many days at the temple of Aman-Ukep performing the sacred rites to bind the Auric Avatar to his will. Along with this blessed hierotitan, our exodus was attended by the Grand Hierophant’s personal guard, known as the Jackal’s Teeth, two units of spearmen taken from the temple guard, and his favored flock of vicious carrion, whom he refers to as Ualatp’s Attendants. This is in addition to my own servants, and Khatep’s cadre of liche priests, many of which had their own followers as well, but little else in terms of military might.
After months of travel across the seas, I was surprised when the Grand Hierophant, led us into the desolate ruins of Nehekharan tomb city. Lost to the annals of history, but rediscovered in his long wanderings, Khatep had brought us to the ruins of Nehek II’s exiled kingdom. Oldest son and heir of Nehek I, King Nehek II had been forced into exile along with the many tribes that had supported his reign for reasons long forgotten. None had known of their fate during my lifetime, but now I stood in the dust collected at the foot of their pyramids, built a world away from Nehekhara with foreign sand and stone. It seemed Nehek’s descendants had prospered for a time in their new home, building pyramids to house their dead nobility and vaults to horde their treasure, but had succumbed to war, disease, or disaster at some point, for their great city now stood empty, their vaults looted, and their dead unattended. From here we would form our army, the exiles of Nehek once again serving the will of the gods and perhaps earning the right to return to Nehekhara along with the rest of us.
Above even the resources of Nehek's kingdom, Khatep had another reason for bringing us to this far off wasteland, known as the Ashen Coast. The Great Betrayer had stolen much of his knowledge from the elves, and after his defeat, the elves had in turn stolen much from his disparate followers. Khatep was confident that at least two of the codices he required would be found in their hands, thought to be held in remote strongholds near the Plains. In this remote land, far from any allies and surrounded by hostile powers, began our campaign for Nekehara's restoration and the Mortuary Cult's redemption.

Chapter 1 - The codex mortifica and the cult of pleasure
Summer, Year 5007 turn 25
Mere weeks after our arrival, the elves were aware of our presence, and into the Ash Plains marched an expeditionary force from Ss’ildra Tor. Other than myself, Khatep was advised by Pashedu the Elder, leader of the Mortuary Council, and Nerutep, he whose followers found the obelisk and knew much of the Black Pyramid as well as its master. All were in accordance that the elves must not be allowed to discover our precarious state, and a quick strike now would allow us to secure the Ashen Coast and cause hesitation among the elves. Crossing to the mainland from Nehek’s isle, the Grand Hierophant confronted the elves in the barren plains and defeated the sizable expedition with the forces we had brought from Nehekhara. Meanwhile, my work among the pyramids and tombs of Nehek’s kingdom had proceeded and the souls of Nehek’s subjects were being recruited to support our campaign. Reinforced by bands of Nehek’s exiled dead, Khatep followed the retreating enemy to their settlement on Titan Peak where he again defeated the elven commanders, and garrisoned the settlement with our own soldiers in order to watch and control the coastal routes. As the elven prisoners were sacrificed for their organs, they promised their lord, Nelosi of the Viper, would avenge their deaths.
As our actions had now announced our presence, shrouded messengers were sent to many elven settlements, for we knew that these elves did not all operate in accordance, often competing with and working against each other, just as the petty kings of Nehekhara were wont to do. While most were hostile to our habitation of the Ashen Coast, the Dracklen Coven and the lord of Hag Graef proved tolerant towards our overtures, content to ignore us for the time being. Khatep’s growing forces pushed further south, into the Grey Guardians, where the wastelands began to give way to the lush southern jungles, and many resources valued by the Mortuary Cult could be found. Hoping to secure this range for the Cult and make an example of the arrogant lord of Ss'ildra Tor, Khatep besieged their fortress seated within the mountains. Unfortunately, another threat had arrived on the Ashen Coast from the northern mountains in the form of a mutant horde, rife with the corruption of the dark gods. Beastlord Gruk Stone-Horn, the cunning monster that had drawn together the horde and directed its violence, desired only to spread the chaos and destruction of his gods, caring not whether their victims were living or undead and would not be turned aside from the Ashen Coast by our emissaries’ words and suggestions. As we risked losing all we had established on the mainland and being cut off in the Grey Guardians, Khatep quickly sacked Ss’ildra Tor after breaking through its defenders, and returned to Titan Peak. Here we confronted the beastmen as they raided the foothills of the Peak, breaking the horde in a costly assault on their sprawling camp.
The threat of the Stone-Horn tribe exemplified our fragile hold in our new homeland and Khatep agreed that we could not move further inland until the Ashen Coast was firmly under our authority. To extend out control north, to where the Ice Flow River melts into the Boiling Sea, we occupied the ruined elven settlements we found at Tyrant Peak, establishing a base from which patrols could be sent from the coast to the inland mountain passes and here Khatep formulated the Cult’s next move. Khatep knew that one of the tomes he searched for was held by the creator of much of the lore the Great Betrayer based his own work upon, the Hag Sorceress of the elves, Morathi. In the ancient city of Quintex, on the other side of the Iron Peaks, the sorceress ruled her cult and manipulated the wider world. From the pathetic beasts of the Peaks, the liche priests had learned of a network of passes that led through the vast mountain range, directly to Quintex and, using this path, Khatep planned to build and army at Tyrant Peak with which to assault Morathi’s city and claim her tome of dark magic. Meanwhile, I would need to raise a second army to bring south and extend our control in the Grey Guardians before others filled the power vacuum left behind by the disgraced dreadlord of Ss’ildra Tor, who had been brought low by a rebellion of her own soldiers.
With two of the Mortuary Cult’s adept priests in my retinue, I recruited an army from Nehek’s dead and returned to the Grey Guardians to find a new breed of vermin raiding our poorly defended holdings. These skaven were numerous but fled before my own forces, and after half a month of pursuit, I deigned to treat with their messengers. Suitably fearful of our outrage, these creatures offered some recompense for the destruction they had wrought and sought an amiable relationship with the Cult. This clan seemed to control much of the southern isthmus, and knowing that Khatep might need support in his war against the elves, I accepted an agreement with their filthy diplomats on the Cult's behalf so that I might turn my attention once more to Ss’ildra Tor.
As I returned to the elven fortress in order to claim it for the Cult, word arrived from Khatep of great success in the north. The Grand Hierophant had been able to draw Morathi and the majority of her warriors into the Iron Peaks, and there met her in open battle far from her fortifications. The Eternal Legion was victorious, sending the wounded ruler fleeing from the field and scattering her elves into the frigid mountains to die amongst the rocks and snow. Khatep then descended on Quintex, building rams and towers to assault the walls, and stormed the city have a few weeks’ siege. In the abandoned palaces of Quintex, a Codex Mortifica was found and was now in the possession of Mortuary Cult, placing us one step closer to our return to Nehekhara.

Chapter 2 - the liber Necronomica and the dwellers of zardok
..., Year 5007 turn 48
With the Sorceress Queen defeated and in hiding, and the Cult of Pleasure in disarray, the rest of the Iron Peaks quickly fell to the Grand Hierophant. Though the frozen Peaks were not hospitable for our kind, and its treacherous topography would make any construction costly, Khatep decided to consolidate our hold of the province in order to mine its valuable iron and obsidian, and harvest its plentiful timber. For similar reasons, my legion sought to extend our authority over the Grey Guardians, for it housed easily accessed stone for construction, and a fertile climate that nurtured vineyards and spice plants. I found Ss’ildra Tor weakly defended, its walls unrepaired, and easily wiped out the elven rebels who squatted within. Following this, I continued into the eastern peninsula to occupy the quarries of … . At this point our influence had grown remarkably since our landing in the early months of the year, and the Mortuary Cult was now split into three governing councils, one each for the Ashen Coast, the Iron Peaks, and the Grey Guardians. These councils reported to the Grand Hierophant and ruled in his name, ensuring that the living within our growing realm remained cowed and did not interfere in the Cult’s operations, and were properly conscripted for labor when required.
The skaven of Clan Gnaw had verified our suspicions that another black tome was held in the vaults of Hexoatl, its dark energies contained by the reptile guardians of the southern jungle cities, and desired to use this information to manipulate us into helping them in their pointless war with the lizardmen. Acknowledging that our needs might indeed align at the moment, my legion began to probe the defenses of the jungles and pillaged the Ziggurat of the Dawn. From their ancient temple-cities, the lizardmen responded in great force and my legion retreated across the sea to the Grey Guardians.
Far to the north, Khatep had returned to the Ashen Coast to assist in the cult's rituals to bind the most powerful souls found among the exiles of Nehek, and consecrate his necrotects' newest constructs. One of Nehek’s successors, King … had awoken to lend his strength to the Cult’s cause, leading a growing army that supported Khatep as he ventured north following rumors of Nehekharan treasure held at the Pits of Zardok, a holding of the Witch-King of Naggarond. Weeks of raiding led to all out assault on the weakly defended elven settlements in the region, and they quickly fell under Khatep's control. The region was plagued by beastmen, and the local tribes had carried off almost all the Nehekharan valuables long ago, but Khatep still sensed their powerful presence nearby. The Hierophant's negotiations with the some of the local tribes led his army into an ambush by the powerful chieftan, Rhaabqu Bloodbreath in the cave systems only a few dozen leagues west of the Pits. The Hierophant prevailed over the beasts, and seized the priceless ritual staff held by the corpse of the tribe's shaman. Inscribed with all the names of the Nehekharan gods and imbued with a peerless ability to control the magical winds, the staff had been crafted by one of the cult's powerful progenitors and lost to tomb raiders over the many centuries.
The encounter with Beastlord Bloodbreath led Khatep to the another tribe in pursuit of the Liber ..., another volume needed to control the energies of the Black Pyramid. This other tribe, known to the elves as the Dwellers of Zardok, boasted many minotaur warriors and other foul monstrosities and its beastlord, Abhishek Blood-Gatherer, was even followed by bands of orcs and goblins. While the Blood-Gatherer did not seek out conflict with the servants of the Mortuary Cult, he eagerly met the Hierophant in battle as he approached in challenge. The bloodthirsty brayherd smashed through much of the Eternal Legion, crushing weapons, shields, and bone to dust, but Khatep's legion was reinforced by King Senusret and the Legion of the Gorgon. The undead overwhelmed monster and mutant alike and the mighty Dwellers of Zardok were brought low despite great losses to the legions. With the Blood-Gatherer's horde scattered into the dark forests, the Hierophant was able to secure the beastlord's treasure hordes and was pleased to find the Liber Necronomica among the valuables.

With the Blood-Gatherer's horde scattered into the dark forests, the Hierophant was able to secure the beastlord's treasure hordes and was pleased to find the Liber Necronomica among the valuables.

chapter 3 - Tome of Souls
..., Year 5007 Turn 68
The success of my legion's invasion of the southern jungles had shown that Hexoatl's defenders could be outmaneuvered and defeated, despite their formidable strength. Their lord, the ancient slann, Mazdamundi, was making slow progress in scouring the jungles of Clan Gnaw's infestation, and this distraction had allowed my legion to capture the Monument of Fallen Gods, but besieging the Solar-City would require many weeks' time and allow for the slann mage-priest to surround and overwhelm my forces. The liche priests were confident that the Tome of Souls, one of the Betrayer's works, had fallen into the hands of the city's wardens and had been locked within their temple vaults. I would need substantial reinforcement if I were to break the defenses and so I urged the Grand Hierophant to march south and capitalize on Hexoatl's current vulnerability, for I only foresaw the city's strength growing as time progressed.
Leaving King Senusret to discourage the warring factions of the north from venturing south towards the holdings of the Mortuary Cult, Grand Hierophant Khatep bolstered the Eternal Legion with the elite regiments that had been awoken from Nehek's tombs and moved south along the Ash Coast. Fresh from victories over the skaven, two commanders of Hexoatl's armies attacked the Grand Hierophant's legion as it passed Tor Ss'ildra. The resulting engagement was close enough to the fortifications for its commanding prince to reinforce the Eternal Legion, assisting the Grand Hierophant in crushing the assaulting forces. This impulsive move by the lizardman left the northern jungles undefended, and allowed Khatep to capture the Fallen Gates, a former stronghold Warlord Toxer and his skaven. The reponse to Khatep's advance was swift, with Lord Mazdamundi personally leading an army to stop the Grand Hierophant, directing its attack from his floating throne. Outside the blasted ruins of the gates, the Auric Avatar clashed with a mighty bastiliadon and Lord Mazdamundi fended off the Children of Geheb, crushing many of their towering forms with his magic as the necrotect, Djedeskhet, led them against the slann mage-priest. Though their forces might have been of similar strength, the undead were driven by Khatep's will and would not relent. The saurus tired and fell, and the bastilidon weas brought down by ushabti great bows, but the Eternal Legion was fueled by the Realm of Souls and Khatep drove them ever onward. Lord Mazdamundi was wounded and forced to teleport from the field as his army routed into the wilderness and, though much of the legion would need to be rebuilt, it appeared that the strength of Hexoatl might be exhausted.
After the battle at the Fallen Gates, I sent my soldiers over the walls of the temple-city at the Mirrors of Tepok and the Grand Hierophant occupied the southern Causeway, thus removing Hexoatl's control over the isthmus's northern access. Meanwhile, the Legion of the Gorgon was forced to retreat from raiding deep into the mountain holdings of Naggarond in order to challenge beastmen invaders far to the south. The Shadowgor Warherd, manning craft stolen or pieced together in the north, had sailed into the inlet of the Witch Sea before spilling onto the Plain of Dogs. The settlement at Tyrant Peak appeared to be their objective and King Senusret expected only to be able to avenge its destruction by the time he would arrive there. However, as he crossed the great river, his scouts surprised him with warnings that the monstrous warband was now headed straight for his legion. The destructive force of the beastmen washed over his legion, bringing it close to collapse, but the living broke first, abandoning their beastlord to death at the hands of the wrathful.
In the south, as I recruited more exiles of Nehek at the Titan Peaks, I sanctioned the Knights of the Crescent, champions of my legion given powerful construct mounts by the necrotects, while the Grand Hierophant began the siege of Hexoatl. Thanks to the continued aggression of Clan Gnaw, the lizardmen seemed unable to relieve the Solar-City, and five weeks later I returned to find that all was prepared for the assault on the city's fortifications. The Ushabti and Tomb Guard regiments were decimated by the energies of the wall defenses, and the Auric Avatar was badly damaged while tearing down the city's gates, but the walls could not keep out the combined might of the two legions. Keeping the constructs mobile, Djedeskhet of Aratoum was destroyed in the battle, among many other losses, but Hexoatl fell to the legions, and the Grand Hierophant claimed all its treasures for the Mortuary Cult. Of these valuables, the Tome of Souls, the First Book of the Betrayer, was the most prized.
