Betrayed by the nobles she once saved from the threat of the Red Duke, Repanse de Lyonesse has been spared from the execution that surely awaited her at the hands of a sham trial, by the calling of the third errantry war against the heathens of Araby. Guided by a vision from the Lady of a great evil harbored inside a giant pyramid of black stone among barren sand dunes, Repanse has pledged her sword to the war in exchange for the guaranteed pardon of all past crimes that comes along with it. As she sails from the Tiliean ports of Salvino she is followed by many of Bretonnia's bravest knights and countless peasants-turned-pilgrims inspired by her deeds past and present. Upon arrival in Copher, her fame immediately places her on par with the noble commanders who have led armies here from the other realms of Bretonnia, and many knights and soldiers refuse to follow any other banner. To succeed in her quest to expose the darkness of the Black Pyramid to the light of the Lady, Repanse must outwit these rival commanders, endure the hostile environment, and destroy whatever enemies lie in wait hidden in the sandy ruins of the Southlands.
For weeks, the sky-riders of Tlaqua had brought back reports of the human armies amassing on the far northern coasts, and the priests of the Green Temple were certain that this event heralded the Prophecy of Raqmok and would lead to the release of a great destructive power held bound deep in the deserts. Tlaqua's Mage-Priests had not awoken from hibernation in centuries and would not awaken now, and of this Master of Skies Tiktaq'to of Hexoatl was certain for this was the reason his lord had sent him far from his own city to command the forces of Tlaqua in service to the Ritual of Alignment. Communication with Lord Mazdamundi for verification of the Great Plan would have been preferable, but time and resources had prevented this thus far and so it was to the Eye in the Heavens that the chiefs and priests of Tlaqua turned for guidance. The Master of Skies was certain the Great Plan had not yet called for, nor were its followers ready for, the confrontation and destruction of the Dark One of the Desert, and so he mustered the warriors of Tlaqua for war against the human armies.
