Your life as an initiate in the cult of Verena has been a balance of study and work with little time for anything else. The dormitory for the initiates of the cult in Altdorf is simply an addition to the Altdorf University dormitories, and you share in many of the tasks that occupy the lay students. You attend lectures by the most esteemed professors of the Empire and study in the Great Library. The temple of Verena connects the Great Library and the university, and both the temple’s and the library’s stewardship falls within the duty of the initiates. What little time away from your delegated tasks that you have, you often spend with fellow initiates and the various staff of Altdorf’s judicial institutions at the Hammer and Scale tavern across the square from the Imperial Court.
As monotonous as the daily life of an initiate has been, the intricate workings of the cult within the city has proven fascinating in its convolution. Arch Lector Gerhard von Sohrn, High Priest of the Altdorf temple, is rarely present except for quick visits to the Great Library. His expertise appears to be constantly required by the emperor’s chancellor or the chief magistrates of the Imperial Court. The priests of Verena officiate the workings of the Court and many magistrates and judges are acolytes of Verena’s cult, but just as many others are disciples of Sigmar or lay officials appointed by the chancellor. When a disciple of Verena is not directly adjudicating, it is still the temple’s responsibility to provide advice and reference for any magistrate that might request it. While you have not traveled out of Reikland, you have been taught that most other cities in the Empire operate similarly. The many towns in between may have their own small temple of Verena, with priests to attend their needs, or they might rely on traveling adjudicators sanctioned by the nearest temple or the local lord.
Having completed most of your academic training, you have just begun the next step of your initiation and will be performing one of these circuits. In preparation for your journey you have completed basic defense training with Pater Junghelm, crossing swords with him in the training yard while he critiqued your use of the Tilean Full-Hold from Lungmun’s Essays on Southern Combat. You have also refined your nascent skill at invoking Verena’s blessings with Pater Rathbone, who claims your initial attempts have shown significant promise with this rare and mystical talent. On your circuit of Reikland, you are expected to offer your services to the lords or elders of every town and village on your path, advising on civil disagreements or assisting in the enforcement of the Empire’s laws. You are also to be vigilant for any subjects worth designating for research by the Altdorf University.
In your simple grey robe, with a few copies of the tomes you thought might be useful, you set off to help share the wisdom of Verena throughout Sigmar’s empire. Old Rathbone gave you one final reminder before you left: To be considered for discipleship, you must find and return one copy of an academic manuscript currently lacking from the Great Library. Unfortunately for you, your circuit would be cut short at only the sixth village you stopped at…
How or why did you become an initiate in Altdorf?
Do you have family in Reikland? What class of society do they inhabit?
What kind of culture and contacts have you found among the Altdorf temple’s initiates and the university’s inhabitants.
